Low-cost airline Indigo maintained its leadership position by carrying 23.85 lakh passengers in August with a market share of 35.3%, Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) data showed.
Jet airways and Air India came distant second and third by flying 13.39 lakh and 11.25 lakh passengers within the country, respectively. The market share of the two carriers stood at 19.8% and 16.6%, respectively. SpiceJet and GoAir followed with 12.3% and 8.1%, respectively. Overall, the number of passengers carried by airlines within the country rose by 20.84% y-o-y to 523.55 lakh from 433.24 lakh a year earlier.
On the passenger load factor (PLF), a key parameter of measuring profitability, SpiceJet tops the chart with 92.1% occupancy, on the back of a low fleet and high advance discount selling of tickets. Domestic airlines registered a slight dip in PLF due to the end of the tourist season. SpiceJet was followed by Jet Airways with an 80.8% PLF while Air India stood third with 79.3% PLF.
With respect to the On Time Performance (OTP) of airline in the domestic market computed from Delhi, Mumbai Hyderabad and Bengaluru airports, full service Vistara, Air Costa and Air Pegasus occupy the first three positions with 95.4%, 93.4 and 91.9%, respectively.
