A night’s stay at the iconic Taj and Oberoi hotels in the city this weekend is at least three times the usual rate, buoyed by the wedding celebrations of Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani’s son Anant Ambani.

While the Trident, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), is fully booked between July 12 and July 14, the Oberoi is charging Rs 32,500 per night for the same dates, which is more than double the usual rate of Rs 13,000 per night.

The Trident, Nariman Point, has no available rooms for the 14th but is offering rooms at Rs 18,000 per night for the 12th and 13th, double the usual rate of Rs 9,000 per night. Both the Trident and the Oberoi are owned by EIH, a company in which the RIL group holds nearly a 19% stake.

Anant Ambani is scheduled to marry Radhika Merchant on July 12 at the Jio World Convention Centre in BKC, followed by post-wedding events over the next two days, including a wedding reception scheduled for July 14.

Sofitel BKC has only basic rooms left for booking on the mentioned dates, as none of its suites, priced up to Rs 2 lakh per night, are available. According to the company’s booking website, basic rooms, usually priced at Rs 11,000 per night, are now being sold at Rs 15,000 to Rs 16,000 per night.

The unusual surge in hotel room bookings in BKC has caused a ripple effect on the prices of other top-tier hotels across the city. The 486-room Taj, Lands End in Bandra, has no availability for July 14, with rates on July 12 and 13 seeing a 40% increase compared to the usual weekend rates.

Like the Sofitel, only the lowest priced rooms are available for stay at the Taj Mahal Palace, Mumbai. A ‘luxury room’ at this property , typically priced at Rs 15,000, is available for Rs 50,000 during this weekend.

The 121-year-old Taj Mahal Palace, flagship property of the Tata-controlled Taj group, has sold out all its suites for the mentioned dates, including the coveted ‘Tata Suite’ and ‘Signature Suite’.

The guest list for the wedding includes personalities from the corporate world, global heads of state, ministers from the Indian government and politicians, Bollywood actors and international stage artists.

UK’s former prime ministers Tony Blair, Boris Johnson, former US secretary of state John Kerry, Aramco CEO Amin Nasser, Morgan Stanley MD Michael Grimes, Samsung Electronics chairman Jay Lee, Lockheed Martin CEO James Taiclet are some of the guests expected to attend the wedding.
