Hurun List 2023: India’s wealthiest from pharma sector;  Cyrus S Poonawalla, Dilip Shanghvi  top sectoral rankings

The pharmaceutical industry boasts the highest number of affluent individuals in India, with a count of 133, according to 2023 wealth study conducted jointly by 360 ONE Wealth and Hurun India.

The chemical and petrochemical sector follows closely with 110 individuals, while the industrial products industry contributes to 96 of the country’s wealthiest individuals. This study analyzed the wealth of 1,319 individuals throughout India, each possessing a minimum net worth of Rs 1,000 crore.

Mukesh Ambani and his family maintain their status as India’s wealthiest, amassing a total wealth of Rs 8,08,700 crore in 2023.

Gautam Adani, who witnessed a 50% reduction in his wealth over the past year, holds the second position with a wealth of Rs 4,74,800 crore.

From the Pharma sector, Serum Institue of India’s Cyrus Poonawala is among the richest Indians. Others from the sector include Dilip Shanghavi (Sun Pharmaceuticals Industries), Murali DIvi & family (Divi’s Laboratories), Pankaj Patel & Family (Zydus Lifesciences), Samir Mehta & Family (Torrent Pharmaceuticals).

The study revealed that Kumar Mangalam Birla and family, along with Niraj Bajaj and family, re-entered the top 10 list of 2023, displacing Uday Kotak of Kotak Mahindra Bank and Vinod Shantilal Adani of the Adani Group.

In a notable shift, Radha Vembu of Zoho has surpassed Falguni Nayar of Nykaa to become the richest self-made Indian woman on the rich list. Manish Kejriwal of Kedaraa has entered the list as the first Indian private equity fund manager, boasting a wealth of Rs 3,000 crore. Jayshree Ullal of Arista Networks, with a wealth of Rs 20,800 crore, ranks as the wealthiest Indian professional on the list.

When it comes to wealth creation, Mumbai, New Delhi, and Bengaluru are the preferred cities, and Tiruppur has emerged as a new entrant on the list.
