In an aviation extravaganza, the No. 5 Squadron of the Indian Air Force, fondly known as the “Tuskers,” marked its Platinum Jubilee at the Air Force Station Ambala. The celebration witnessed a spectacular air display featuring the Suryakiran Aerobatics Team, the Aakashganga para-diving team, and formations by Rafale and Jaguar aircraft.
Paying Tribute to a Legacy
Air Marshal Tejinder Singh, the Commodore Commandant of the No. 5 Squadron, released a special ‘postal cover’ to honor the squadron’s rich legacy. He expressed gratitude to all those who contributed to the remarkable 75 years of service. The ceremony brought together current personnel and veterans, creating a nostalgic gathering reflecting the squadron’s illustrious history.
From B-24 Liberators to Jaguars: A Storied Journey
Born on November 2, 1948, under the leadership of Wg Cdr JRS ‘Danny’ Dantra in Kanpur, equipped with B-24 Liberator heavy bomber aircraft, the Tuskers have played a pivotal role in safeguarding the skies. Their contributions span significant operations, including those in Congo, the 1965 War with Pakistan, and the 1971 War for the Liberation of Bangladesh.
UN Mission and Heroic Acts
In a unique feat, during the 1961 United Nations mission in Congo, the 5 Squadron operated Canberra long-range attack aircraft. Notably, the squadron remains the only fighter squadron of the Indian Air Force to have been deployed in a UN mission. During the 1965 war, they executed daring raids on Sargodha and Peshawar airfields, earning accolades with awards like MVC, VrCs, and VSMs.
Jaguars Take Flight: Operation Pawan and Beyond
The squadron embraced a new era in August 1981 when re-equipped with Deep Penetration Strike-capable aircraft, the ‘Jaguar’ at Ambala. In July 1988, they participated in Operation Pawan, supporting the Indian Peace Keeping Force in Sri Lanka. Over the years, the Tuskers have showcased their prowess internationally in exercises with foreign air forces, epitomizing professionalism.
Strength Is Victory: A Motto That Soars
Today, the Tuskers, flying upgraded Jaguar aircraft, stand as the vanguard of the IAF’s deep penetration strike force. Their dedication to training echoes their motto, “Shakti Vijayete,” translating to ‘Strength is Victory.’ As they continue to hone their skills, the Tuskers remain a symbol of strength, resilience, and triumph in the Indian Air Force’s remarkable journey.
