As India advances in the defence sector, domestic companies are stepping up to meet the demands of modern military hardware. One such company is Madras Rubber Factory (MRF), a globally recognized name in tyre manufacturing. MRF has been pivotal in supplying specialized tyres for the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) fighter jets and helicopters, ensuring that these crucial assets have the reliability and durability required for both routine operations and combat scenarios.

MRF’s Legacy in Aviation Tyres

MRF’s journey in manufacturing tyres for military aircraft began in 2006. Since then, the company has developed an extensive portfolio of tyres for various aircraft, including the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas, the Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) Dhruv, and the Sukhoi Su-30MKI. These tyres are also used in Russian-origin aircraft like the MiG-29 and the IL-76 military transport aircraft, as well as in helicopters like the Mi-17. Furthermore, MRF has supplied a significant number of tyres for Jaguar fighter jets to Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and the IAF.

The Aero-Muscle: A New Era for LCA Tejas Mk2

During the recent ‘Tarang Shakti’ exercise at Sulur Airbase (Aug 6-14, 2024) in Tamil Nadu, MRF showcased its latest innovation—the ‘Aero-Muscle’ tyre, designed specifically for the upcoming LCA Tejas Mk2 fighter jet. This new version of the LCA is a significant upgrade from its predecessor, being larger and more powerful. To match these advancements, MRF has developed a tyre that is not only bigger but also stronger, capable of withstanding the higher speeds, greater loads, and more intense operational demands of the LCA Mk2.

The tyre size for the LCA Mk2 is 27.5 X 7.5-16, compared to the 26 X 8.0-14 size of the LCA Mk1. This increase in size reflects the enhanced capabilities of the aircraft, ensuring it can perform at its peak under all conditions. The ‘Aero-Muscle’ tyres are a testament to MRF’s commitment to supporting India’s defence industry with world-class products that are tailored to the specific needs of modern military aviation.

Strengthening National Security

MRF’s contribution to the Indian military extends beyond just tyres. The company’s work in this field represents a significant step towards self-reliance in defence production, aligning with the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat‘ initiative. Over the past two decades, MRF has manufactured approximately 26,000 tyres for various military aircraft, reinforcing the country’s aviation industry and national security.

Looking Ahead

As India prepares for the induction of the LCA Mk2 by 2029, with the first prototype expected by 2026, MRF’s role in this project will be crucial. The company’s ability to deliver high-quality, durable tyres will help ensure that the LCA Mk2 meets its performance targets and serves as a reliable asset for the IAF in the years to come. Through its continuous innovation and dedication, MRF is not just manufacturing tyres but is also contributing to the safety, reliability, and effectiveness of India’s defence forces.
