Dense fog at Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi is expected to disrupt flight operations on Thursday (January 2) due to significantly reduced visibility. The dense fog blanketed parts of the city as temperatures dropped to 7 degrees Celsius early morning.

Airport authorities have warned that the low visibility conditions may lead to delays or disruptions in flight services. Travelers are advised to check for updates before heading to the airport. According to FlightRadar24, at least 106 departing flights and 34 arriving flights have been delayed, with the average delay being 23 minutes as of 8.30 am. As many as five flights have been cancelled so far.

“While landings and take offs continue at Delhi Airport, flights that are not CAT Ill compliant may get affected. Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information. Any inconvenience caused is deeply regretted,” Delhi Airport said in a post on X.

Airlines issue advisory

Meanwhile, airlines including IndiGo and Spicejet have also issued advisory for the passengers. “Delhi is currently experiencing significantly reduced visibility due to fog, impacting flight schedules. Customers are advised to check their flight status before heading to the airport http://bit.ly/3ZWAQXd and allow extra time for travel, as low visibility may lead to slow traffic on the roads. Hoping for a bright, clear, sunny day ahead,” IndiGo said on X.

“Due to bad weather in Delhi (DEL), and Amritsar (ATQ) all departures/arrivals and their consequential flights might get affected. Passengers are requested to keep a check on their flight status via http://spicejet.com/#status,” Spicejet said in a post on X.

Dense fog in Delhi

Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for moderate fog across several parts of Delhi, with dense fog expected in isolated areas. Today’s forecast predicts a maximum temperature of 17 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 7 degrees Celsius.

The IMD has forecasted better visibility and slightly warmer conditions starting January 3, offering relief to Delhi residents from the intense cold and dense fog. A cold day is defined as when the maximum temperature is 4.5 degrees Celsius to 6.5 degrees Celsius below the seasonal average.
