As part of its aviation expansion strategy, Air India Express is in the process of merging with AIX Connect and plans to introduce 50 new B737 MAX aircraft over the next 15 months. The combined entity, which is set to unveil its new brand on October 18, marks a significant step in the Tata Group’s efforts to strengthen its presence in the aviation industry.
Managing Director of Air India Express and AIX Connect, Aloke Singh, conveyed that essential milestones have been achieved in terms of integrating the two carriers. The combined entity currently boasts a fleet of 56 aircraft, consisting of 26 B737, 2 B737 MAX, 5 A320 neo, and 23 A320 aircraft.
Increase in flight frequencies
Singh stated, “Over the next 15 months, a total of 50 new B737 MAX aircraft will join the LCC fleet, allowing us to expand our network to new destinations and increase flight frequencies on existing routes.” The focus is now on preparing to utilise this additional capacity, with more than 800 aircrew and operational staff in various stages of training.
Together, the combined entity operates around 2,700 flights each week, serving 44 destinations, including 14 international ones. It will function as the Low-Cost Carrier (LCC) of the Tata Group, which took over the management of Air India and Air India Express in January of the previous year.
Integration progress
Regarding integration progress, Singh highlighted that key milestones have been accomplished, such as migrating to a common reservations and check-in system, sharing a unified website and agent portal, harmonizing product and service offerings, and adopting a common brand and domain.
Merging Vistara with Air India
The Tata Group is in the process of consolidating its airline business by merging Vistara with Air India. Vistara, a joint venture between Tata and Singapore Airlines, is a pivotal part of the Tata Group’s aviation portfolio.
