Feeling hamstrung in its efforts at curbing terror attacks across the country due to lack of coordination among states, the Centre is planning to convene a meeting of chief ministers to advocate the need for a special national-level agency to investigate federal crimes.
The move is seen as an immediate after effect of the recent blasts in Hyderabad, Ajmer and Ludhiana, where the security machinery was examining inter-state links to get to the bottom of the incidents.
??Home minister Shivraj Patil is keen on a consensus on the issue and is convening a meeting of chief ministers here soon,?? sources said, pointing at the reports of several police reforms committees, which suggested setting up such an agency.
According to the present provision, law & order is a state subject. When a blast occurs, states find it difficult to investigate, as in most cases links are found in more than one state and trans-border connection.
