Sterlite Industries Ltd, a subsidiary of London listed Vedanta Resources Plc, on Monday said the company has reported a growth of 133% in its consolidated net profit to Rs 1,936 crore for the fourth quarter ended March 2010 against Rs 832 crore in the corresponding quarter last year. The net profit grew on the back of higher zinc and copper prices on the LME. The company’s consolidated net sales during the quarter stood at Rs 7,111 crore, up 64% as compared to Rs 4,336 crore in Q4 FY 2009. The company’s Ebitda for Q4 was also up 158%, the company said.

Reacting to the results, Sterlite Industries shares on Monday were up 5.95% to close at Rs 842.50 on the BSE.

Meanwhile, the board has proposed a dividend of Rs 3.75 per share on the face value of Rs 2 per share to the shareholders of the company. Further, the board has also approved to issue bonus shares in the ratio of 1:1, which means every shareholder will get one equity share for every one held in the company by them. Besides, the board has approved the subdivision of the face value of the equity shares of the company to Rs 1 per share from Rs 2 each.

According to the company, its revenues from the copper business for Q4 was Rs 3,653 crore compared with Rs 2,260 crore in the corresponding prior period. Naveen Agarwal, vice chairman of the company said, “Sterlite has commenced work to increase its copper capacity from 400,000 tonnes to 800,000 tonnes, which will meet about 10% of the world custom smelting capacity,” Agarwal was speaking at a conference call on Monday.

Revenues from the aluminium business during the quarter and for the full year dipped to Rs 810 crore and Rs 2,746 crore respectively, compared with Rs 813 crore and Rs 3,934 crore in the corresponding prior periods. Its zinc sales during the quarter were augmented by the sale of around 86,000 dry metric tonnes of surplus zinc concentrate and 10,000 dry metric tonnes of surplus lead concentrate.

Revenues during Q4 in the zinc business were Rs 2,484 crore and Rs 7,943 crore respectively, an increase of 99% and 42% compared to corresponding prior periods. Sterlite’s revenue (net of transmission and wheeling charges) from the power business for Q4 was Rs 164 crore compared with Rs 16 crore last year.
