Two-wheeler companies, who have witnessed an overall drop in sales in the month of December, however, have one reason to cheer. Their exports have grown, thanks to a strategic focus on the overseas market.

While Bajaj Auto has witnessed 29% growth in exports to 50,702 units compared with 39,385 units in the corresponding period last year, TVS Motor Company steals the show with 103% growth in exports to 14,402 units of two wheelers in December as against 7,088 units in the corresponding period of the previous year.

?TVS has been conscientiously working on exports and it has shown a steady and healthy growth. The team has strategically planned and tapped key export markets over the last three-five years in a phased manner,? said HS Goindi, senior vice president, international and three wheeler business, TVS Motor Company.

Currently, TVS Motor operates in over 50 countries with exports to countries including Asia, Africa and Latin America. It exports bikes including Victor, Apache, Star and MAX (2-stroke model) and Scooty at present. TVS Motor plans to add markets like Brazil, Iraq and parts of the Carribean, indicated Goindi, adding that the company is working towards improving international reach and sales.

Asked what has been the export booster, Goindi said, ?Primarily, motorcycles contribute 80-85% of the total exports. We expect the scooter market to grow significantly in the future.?

TVS Motor Company has reported 5.4% drop in total two-wheeler sales. The company managed to sell 97,576 units in December 2007 against 1,03,188 units in the corresponding period of the previous year. In December, the company?s motorcycle sales stood at 51,293 units in comparison to 58,756 units recorded in December 2006.

In the scooter segment, TVS Scooty sales stood at 14,568 units in December in comparison to 16,616 units in the corresponding period the previous year. The company expects its scooter segment too face further lift with the launch of TVS Scooty Teenz Electric Vehicle.

The new Scooty Teenz Electric Vehicle is expected to be launched during the beginning of the fourth quarter. Also to be launched during the same quarter is the Apache RTR EFI and its three-wheeler variants. With this motorcycle, it would be offering for the first time electronic fuel injection technology in the 160 cc category.

TVS Motor aims to cross the 14,000 sales mark in January and expects the upward trend in exports to continue, said Goindi.

During December, Bajaj Auto saw an overall drop of 7% in sales of two and three wheelers to 1,99,470 units compared with 2,14,928 units in the corresponding period last year. Of the total sales, two-wheelers constituted 1,77,249 and three-wheelers 22,221 units, during December. Currently, Bajaj bikes, including Pulsar and Boxer, are available in the international market. The company in an earlier release had expressed interest to make its Bajaj XCD 125 DTS-Si available to the international markets in January 2008.
