Reliance Energy Ltd (REL), which has acquired three power distribution companies (discom) in Orissa, is planning to invest Rs 850 crore in the state to strengthen the distribution network.
Guru Charan Panda, a senior consultant responsible for REL’s power distribution operations in Orissa, told FE that the three discoms–Wesco, Nesco and Southco-have kickstarted upgradation of the distribution infrastructure with an immediate project outlay of Rs 50 crore. The target of the project was to supply quality power to upcoming industries and high-value customers in Orissa, he added.
The consultant said efforts were on to get a sanction to the tune of Rs 800 crore under the APDRP Phase II programmes. According to him, the three discoms are currently persuading the Union power ministry to complete the existing APDRP works.
Panda said the discoms have electrified around 1500 villages in the states under different schemes. At present, they are co-operating with central PSUs like NTPC, PGCIL and NHPC for rural electrification under the Rajiv Gandhi Gramin Vidyut Yojna.
Besides, the discoms were also implementing the Biju Gramin Jyoti Yojana, he added.
