Marking an end to the high-decibel poll campaign in Gujarat, the war of words between the BJP and the Congress culminated with the latter describing Narendra Modi as a rakhasha (demon) and portraying party chief Sonia Gandhi as Goddess Durga while LK Advani took on Prime Minister Manmohan Singh calling him a novice in politics.

Invoking Hindu mythology to depict Modi as evil, the Congress said, he is not accountable to anyone, be it the people, the Constitution or his own party high command. He is like Raktabijasura, whose single drop of blood can give rise to thousands of more rakshasas, Congress leader Veerappa Moily said. He further said Modi was like Mahisasura or Bhasmasura, who cannot see anyone but his nemesis Goddess Durga, who he said was Sonia Gandhi.

Meanwhile in the bid to play on Modis pet turf terrorism and national security theme and respond back in the same coin, the Congress through advertisements in local media, recalled the black day when a minister in the NDA government went to Kandahar to release terrorist Masood Azhar instead of hanging him. The advertisement also carried the photograph of Azhar. It also referred to BJP leader LK Advanis visit to Pakistan to bow down at the grave of Mohammad Ali Jinnah along with the praise he showered on Jinnah in Gujarat governments official publication.

On the other hand, the BJP had its own counter to the Congress campaign. Advani took a dig at Prime Minister over his remarks on the former being anointed BJPs prime ministerial candidate, saying he was not a political person.

I would just say that the Prime Minister is not a political person because a politically aware person cannot make such a comment, Advani said.

Reacting to Singhs remarks during electioneering in the state that BJPs announcement of Advani as their prime ministerial candidate was made to counter Modi, Advani said, He is a simple man and that is why he said something like this.
