There was drama in the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly for the third straight day: Omar Abdullah stayed away from the House, and Mehbooba Mufti made a spectacle of tearing up a CBI report giving a clean chit to the chief minister in the 2006 sex scandal.

Out on the streets, National Conference supporters agitated against the alleged slur on Omar, blocking traffic and burning effigies of Mehbooba and PDP leader Muzaffar Beigh, who alleged in the House on Tuesday that Omars name figured in the CBI investigation into the sex scandal.

We demand a judicial probe into the allegations. The CBI probe is not acceptable, Mehbooba said as Speaker M A Lone tabled a copy of the CBI report in the House. The CBIs report to the Speaker said: This is clarified that nine chargesheets in the CBI case were filed in the competent court against 17 accused persons. The name of Omar Abdullah, son of Farooq Abdullah, does not figure in the list of the accused persons who were chargesheeted in the case.

However, PDP members led by Mehbooba alleged that the CBI was trying to protect certain people.

Several hundred NC activists took out a rally in Omars support in Baramulla. The allegations against the Chief Minister are fabricated, malicious and baseless. Beigh by levelling wild allegations against our leader has attempted to spit on the sky, said local leader Jan Mohammad, who led the rally.
