Pinned down by the Opposition, the government on Thursday was forced to give an assurance in the House that the security cover of top political leaders including BSP chief Mayawati, SP supremo Mulayam Singh, RJD president Lalu Prasad and BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi will not be downgraded.

BSP MPs stormed into the well of both Houses of Parliament on Thursday morning, protesting over reports that the government intended to scale down security of senior politicians. The BSP forced adjournments in both houses, relenting only after a categorical assurance from the government.

Leader of the House in Lok Sabha, Pranab Mukherjee told members that there would be no compromise on the security of political leaders.

Controversy over the issue arose after reports that the security review panel of the home ministry, which had met recently, had recommended withdrawal of NSG guards deployed for the personal protection of these leaders.

Mayawatis security was ramped up a few months ago to Z plus category by the previous UPA government.

How can the threat go away so soon asked BSP leader Satish Chandra Mishra in Rajya Sabha.

Interestingly, after the issue was settled in the Lok Sabha, Congress and SP then joined hands to target the Mayawati government for removing security of several non-BSP leaders in Uttar Pradesh.
