The address to the nation from the Red Fort by the prime minister was significant on two counts. It was one of introspection, stressing on the need to recapture our distinctly Indian ethos of honest perseverance towards reaching our immense potential. Here, the clarity of purpose of Narendra Modi came through amply. For an Independence Day speech, it was remarkably silent on our currently disturbed neighbourhood. There was not one mention of our twin at Partition, as was wont in the PM addresses in the past. The ritual was to tellingly linger on proxy wars and export of terrorism with appropriate bravado. This departure from the norm should give such neighbours food for thought?that by now the no-nonsense persona of Modi has been discerned, it can only set in unease if not trepidation, in our hitherto cavalier neighbours. Perhaps this was a subtler way

of conveying a message?through silence.
