Global coffee consumption will grow about 1.5% this year as a slowdown in economic growth fails to deter users, according to Roberio Silva, executive director of the International Coffee Organisation.

?We don?t expect the consumption to fall because of the economic turbulence globally,? Silva said in an interview in New Delhi. ?Consumption was remarkable in 2011 despite the economic turbulence.?

The increase in demand will be driven by countries including Russia, China, Indonesia, India and coffee-producing countries, he said. Global consumption was 135 million bags in 2010 and usage last year remained ?resilient?, the organisation said on January 16. ?I?m very optimistic about the balance between supply and demand,? Silva said. ?We expect supply to be in line with the demand.?

Coffee consumption has grown in 2011 despite economic turbulences in many importing countries, says International Coffee Organisation.?Preliminary information on world consumption in calendar year 2011 indicates that it has remained resilient to the economic turbulence seen in many importing countries,? the organisation (ICO) said in a report. Total consumption in calendar year 2010 reached 135 million bags of 60 kg each, with the most dynamic growth coming from domestic consumption in exporting countries, it added.

Global consumption of coffee rose 2.4% to 135 million bags in 2010 compared with 131.8 million bags in 2009.
