With the Indian Express report on the Liberhan Commission probe triggering a political storm, the BJP stalled proceedings in both Houses of Parliament on Monday. Its demand: the government must table the commission report along with the ATR without delay.

Home minister P Chidambaram maintained in both Houses that the report will be tabled during the current session. Recalling that MS Liberhan had submitted the report on June 30, 2009, he said the government was required to place it before the two Houses together with the ATR within six months from that date.

Stoutly denying the suggestion that the leakage of the report could be sourced to his ministry, he said there was only one copy of the report in the home ministry ?and it is in safe custody.? He said ?no one from the ministry of home affairs has spoken to any journalist about the report.?

Both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha underwent two adjournments?the first around 11.30 am and the second after noon? to finally adjourn for the day after 2 pm. Members belonging to the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party kept standing all through the din to press the government to table the report.

In the Lok Sabha, BJP and SP members were visibly agitated as soon as the House met. Leader of Opposition, LK Advani, who had given a notice for the suspension of Question Hour, said he was surprised to read The Indian Express story. He sought to know who had leaked the contents of the report, which had not yet been placed on the table of the House.

?I am surprised,? the leader of the Opposition said, adding that he expected it would be said that Advani mobilised people at Ayodhya. But, ?The word indictment has been used in it.?

Advani said the report had referred to an ?indictment? of Vajpayee. ?Had there been my indictment, my party?s indictment, one could understand, but looking at the mention of Vajpayee, I felt it is my duty (to speak up for him).?

He said the publication of the report amounted to a breach of privilege, but that was a different issue. ?I have not taken recourse to a privilege motion,? he said.

SP leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, CPI(M) leader Basudeb Acharia, BSP leader Dhara Singh Chauhan and BJD leader Arjun Charan Sethi asked the government to table the report.

As soon as the Rajya Sabha met, Leader of the Opposition Arun Jaitley raised the issue. He said the leakage of the report before it was tabled in Parliament has lowered the dignity of the House.

After Chidambaram?s statement, Jaitley said if the home minister is to be believed then the ?breach of the privilege of this House has taken place at the behest of the Commission? since the only other copy of the report is with the Commission. He sought an inquiry into the matter.

CPI(M)?s Sitaram Yechury, SP?s Amar Singh, CPI?s D Raja and Shiv Sena?s Manohar Joshi also demanded immediate tabling of the report.

With the Opposition continuing to point fingers at the government, Chidambaram at one point said, ?I must be a very foolish man to leak it and embarrass myself.?
