At least one person was killed and another injured in a shooting on July 25 at a student housing complex at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. The deadly shooting has led to a shelter-in-place order. The authorities searched for a suspect believed to still be on campus.

Campus police responded to reports of gunfire at Casas del Rio, a student housing complex, where they discovered two individuals with gunshot wounds. One victim was pronounced dead at the scene, while the other sustained injuries that were not life-threatening, the university confirmed on social media.

In response to the incident, the university shut down its central campus in Albuquerque, citing safety concerns. “Out of an abundance of caution, UNM has closed its Albuquerque central campus,” the statement read. “Multiple law enforcement agencies are on scene and actively investigating.” Local news outlet KOB 4 reported that the shooting occurred during new student orientation, which was underway at the time.
