Thanksgiving traditionally brings families together over turkey, pie and precious time off, and this year, that also means quieter shopping streets across the US. Big-box retailers including Walmart, Target, Costco and Aldi are taking a full break on Thursday.
They are pressing pause not just on profits but to give employees a chance to be home for the holiday, a trend that has grown stronger in recent years.
Which stores will remain closed?
As reported by Axios and USA Today, most national chains, from department stores like Macy’s, Kohl’s and JCPenney to beloved speciality brands such as Bath & Body Works, Sephora and Apple, are keeping their doors locked on Thanksgiving Day.
That includes major warehouse clubs like Sam’s Club and BJ’s Wholesale, as well as sporting goods stores like Dick’s and Academy Sports. Popular discount giants including Burlington, Ross and TJ Maxx will also remain closed.
Which stores are open for limited hours?
A number of grocery chains are choosing a middle path: opening briefly for last-minute ingredients before sending workers home early.
Stores such as Acme, Ingles, Giant Food, Meijer and Ralphs are operating reduced daytime hours that vary by location, and in some cases closing as early as noon.
Pharmacies like CVS will stay open in limited numbers, mainly their 24-hour outlets, while drugstore competitor Walgreens says only select locations will be operating.
Convenience stores that will remain open
For travellers and late-night snack seekers, convenience chains will keep the lights on. Many locations of 7-Eleven, Circle K, Wawa and Pilot Flying J plan to operate around the clock.
Travel stops such as Love’s and TravelCenters of America are also sticking with standard hours to support holiday road traffic.
Restaurants that will remain open
If cooking isn’t on the menu this year, several national restaurant chains are planning to welcome customers — though hours may vary widely by franchise.
Familiar names like Cracker Barrel, Denny’s, IHOP, McDonald’s, Waffle House and Burger King will have dining rooms open for those celebrating outside home kitchens.
Coffee stops including Starbucks and Dunkin’ are expected to operate too, but holiday schedules depend heavily on local decisions.
