The United Kingdom government has proposed new guidelines on the ban on mobile phones across England schools including at break times. Mobile phones have been banned in many schools in the country and have shown a great difference in students’ approach towards education as per the British government.
UK Education Secretary Gillian Keegan emphasized the need for varied approaches to address the issue of mobile phones in schools, which includes measures like banning phones on school premises, collecting phones upon arrival, or securely storing them during school hours. Keegan highlighted that schools are learning environments where mobile phones can be a significant distraction.
“We are empowering our dedicated teachers with tools to enhance behaviour management and focus on their core task: teaching,” she stated. UK media watchdog Office of Communications (OFCOM) data indicates that 97 per cent of twelve-year-olds own a mobile phone, prompting concerns about online bullying, distraction, and classroom disruptions, leading to educational setbacks, according to the Department for Education (DfE).
UK Technology Secretary Michelle Donelan underscored the importance of balancing the digital world’s opportunities with children’s well-being and education. Donelan highlighted the UK’s leading legislation to ensure online safety for young people and emphasized that the government’s initiative will further support parents and educators.
The government’s guidance addresses parental concerns about mobile phone usage, as indicated by the National Parent Survey conducted by the charity ParentKind, revealing that 44 per cent of parents worry about their children’s screen time, particularly among secondary school students.
According to DfE, schools have successfully managed mobile phone usage through strategies like providing lockers with charging facilities, and ensuring phones stay out of classrooms. Schools implementing such measures reported positive outcomes, with improved learning environments and focused teaching staff.
The government’s action aligns England with other European nations like France, Italy, and Portugal, which have implemented restrictions on mobile phone usage in schools.
