Once-deemed one of Europe’s most peace countries, even Switzerland now appears to fallen prey to “migrant riots.” 48 hours after a teen boy of a “migrant background” was killed during police chase, the Swiss city of Lausanne witnessed violent processions, according to the UK news outlet Metro.
Visegrad 24, the self-proclaimed “Europe’s leading social media news hub,” shared visuals of the unruly undertakings in the middle of the street via social media. “Switzerland is experiencing its first migrant riots,” the post began.
‘Migrant’ teen killed in Switzerland: What happened
A 17-year-old boy was killed as he was fleeing authorities, who claim he was riding a stolen scooter. Reports suggested that police chased him, keeping a distance of over 100 metres. However, the teenager is believed to have lost control of the two-wheeler while driving over a speed bump, eventually crashing into a garage wall. While attempts were made to revive the boy, he ended up dying at the scene.
Although authorities haven’t officially named the boy yet, Swiss media reported that his alleged migrant roots eventually triggered (alongside the broader pattern of discrimination) the clash between immigrant communities and authorities in the Swiss city.
In addition to the video shared by Visegrad, AFP also put out photos of the rioting in Lausanne following the boy’s death. One such picture captured fireworks exploding near a police officer in riot gear. Officers also deployed rubber bullets and tear gas in response to the incident.
Anti-immigration official says ‘need to take the city back’ from migrants
Thibault Schaller, a local councillor for the right-wing, anti-immigration Swiss People’s Party (SVP), confirmed the account having been at the scene. Claiming he was attacked, he said on X that a group of about 10 to 15 people surrounded him on all sides and struck him.
“Buses and trash cans set on fire in Prélaz (Lausanne) in reaction to the death of the 17-year-old youth who died Sunday morning while fleeing the police on a stolen scooter,” he tweeted. “Unaware of what it’s about, I head to the scene. Some antifa recognise me, three surround me, back against the wall, and they order me to leave.”
“I refuse and ask what’s happening. One pushes me, I push him back then step back, someone shouts something, and ten, fifteen people come running at me from everywhere,” he continued. “I run away, take hits, they block my path, I fall, protect myself, I pick up while one or two people tell me to leave. I get up, run, get surrounded again against a wall, blows, then I manage to get away by running.”
Schaller, whose party has been outspoken about what it labels “uncontrolled immigration,” said he was “fined,” but urged that they needed to take the city back.
