Myanmar earthquakes death toll climbs to 694

The number of deaths from the powerful earthquake in Myanmar has increased to 694, and it has injured at least 1,670 people, as per the latest report by Reuters. The numbers have been issued in an official statement from the country’s ruling military government. Myanmar’s military leader, Min Aung Hlaing, has instructed the authorities to carry out urgent rescue and relief operations in the affected areas. He has also asked them to help survivors and to reduce further casualties. The tremor triggered widespread panic, with eyewitnesses reporting that people were rushing out from the swaying buildings. Videos on social media went viral, showing hanging fixtures in high-rise buildings and water spilling out from the swimming pool.

Just after the main earthquake of 7.2-magnitude, the region again experienced a 6.4 magnitude aftershock, followed by additional tremors, including a 4.9 magnitude quake later in the day.

The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) has confirmed the multiple seismic incidents throughout the day, all taking place at a shallow depth of 10 kilometres, surging the possibility of aftershocks.

According to NCS, on late Friday night, at 11:56 pm (local time), another 4.2 magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar. It was recorded at Latitude 22.15 N and Longitude 95.41 E at a depth of 10 km.

Structural damage caused by earthquake

Late Friday night, at 11:56 pm (local time), another 4.2-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar, according to NCS. It was measured to be at Latitude 22.15 N, Longitude 95.41 E, at a depth of 10 km.

The quakes have resulted in severe damage to infrastructure. According to The Nation News, a 30-story under-construction building in Bangkok’s Chatuchak district crumbled during the tremors, reportedly trapping 43 workers inside. The intensity of the earthquake was seen in a video shared by CNN,  in which a bridge over the Irrawaddy River in Mandalay collapses into the water amid a cloud of dust.
