A batch of Lay’s potato chips has been recalled in the United States following a warning from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) about potential life-threatening health risks associated with the products. Initially flagged with a lower risk level, federal health authorities later upgraded the recall to ‘Class 1,’ the most serious level, after concerns grew over possible contamination.

The chips, manufactured by Frito-Lay, could pose a significant danger to individuals with milk allergies or sensitivities. The FDA has stated that consuming these contaminated chips could lead to “serious adverse health consequences or even death,” as reported by the New York Post.

While Frito-Lay has not received reports of allergic reactions related to the affected batch, the company is working to manage the situation. They have reassured consumers that no other batches of Lay’s products are impacted by the same health risks.

When were the Lay’s chips recalled?

The recall of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips was announced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) last month, involving a limited batch of 13 oz. bags due to concerns that they may contain undeclared milk. Importantly, no other Lay’s products, flavors, sizes, or variety packs have been included in the recall.

The affected chips were available for purchase in Oregon and Washington state starting from November 3. These chips were distributed to select retail stores and online e-commerce platforms.

Consumers who have purchased these chips should immediately dispose of any bags marked with a “guaranteed fresh” date of February 11 and a manufacturing code of either “6462307xx” or “6463307xx.” This is especially critical for households with individuals who have a milk allergy.

What did the company say?

Frito-Lay was alerted to the issue by a customer who reported the presence of undeclared milk in the product. The FDA issued a warning on December 16, stating that individuals with milk allergies or severe sensitivities face the risk of serious or life-threatening reactions if they consume the affected chips. As of now, Frito-Lay has reported that no allergic reactions related to this recall have been reported.
