Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to Russia kicked off with a critical discussion on regional connectivity in his meeting with Iran’s newly elected President, Dr Masoud Pezeshkian.

The two leaders focused on the strategic importance of the Chabahar Port and the International North-South Transport Corridor (INSTC), which are vital to enhancing trade and economic partnerships across the region. Both leaders highlighted that these projects not only strengthen bilateral ties but also improve access to Central Asia and support the reconstruction of Afghanistan.

At a special briefing on Day 1 of Prime Minister’s visit, foreign secretary Vikram Misri noted that “seamless connectivity in the region was a theme of this meeting,” as both leaders highlighted the role of the Chabahar Port in fostering stronger links between India, Iran, and their neighbors. The recent long-term agreement on Chabahar further demonstrates the commitment of both countries to enhancing regional trade and economic collaboration.

Addressing West Asia and Regional Stability

Beyond connectivity, the escalating conflict in West Asia was also a central point of discussion. Prime Minister Modi expressed deep concern over the rising violence, calling for dialogue and diplomacy to de-escalate tensions. “India’s good relations with all parties involved place it in a unique position to advocate for peace,” Misri explained, as Modi stressed the importance of protecting civilians and preventing further harm in the region.

President Pezeshkian acknowledged India’s role in promoting regional stability and emphasized the need for continued cooperation to address these challenges.

Multilateral Cooperation and Afghanistan

Both leaders also reviewed their cooperation within multilateral platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) and BRICS. President Pezeshkian particularly acknowledged India’s support in Iran’s accession to these key forums. They agreed to further strengthen their collaboration in addressing regional issues, especially the situation in Afghanistan, where both emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and providing humanitarian assistance.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Prime Minister Modi extended an invitation to President Pezeshkian to visit India, which was warmly accepted. Through this productive dialogue, it is clear that regional connectivity, especially through the development of the Chabahar Port, remains a central pillar in the growing partnership between India and Iran.
