Hamas is expected to release 33 hostages in the initial phase of a ceasefire-hostage agreement currently undergoing in Doha, as per a report by CNN citing Israeli officials. The agreement deals with the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Israeli authorities believe that most of the 33 hostages are alive, however, there is a possibility that some deceased individuals may be also part of the release.

Details of the agreement

The deal is considered a major step in the ongoing efforts to settle the hostage crisis stemming from the October 7, 2023 attacks. As per the latest report, around 94 hostages are under the hold of Hamas and its allies. Implementation of the decision is expected to take place soon as the deal has been signed and discussions in Doha are nearing finalization.

During the first phase of the ceasefire, Israeli forces are expected to maintain a presence across the Philadelphi Corridor on the Egypt-Gaza border. Agreement regarding dimensions of a buffer zone has not been solved yet as Hamas is seeking a 300–500-meter zone whereas Israel is demanding a 2,000-meter area. Moreover, Palestinian prisoners who are responsible for conducting fatal attacks on Israelis would be sent to Gaza or other countries rather than the West Bank.

The latest development took place late Sunday during a meeting between Israeli Mossad Director David Barnea and mediators in Doha. Israeli officials are hoping for the best but are still cautious about the deal as it still requires clearance from Israel’s security and government cabinet. The deal is also expected to face challenge in the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, the Hostages and Missing Families Forum has urged patience, highlighting their commitment to secure the return of all hostages. The conflict has resulted in immense loss, as the Israeli military’s action in Gaza has reportedly resulted in more than 46,000 Palestinian deaths and has injured over 100,000, as per data from Gaza’s health ministry.
