Adrian Simancas was kayaking with his father in the Strait of Magellan, Chile, when a humpback whale swallowed him along with his boat before miraculously spitting him out a few seconds later, as captured in a video.

The incident occurred on Saturday near the San Isidro Lighthouse in Chile’s southernmost Patagonia region. Despite the terrifying experience, the 24-year-old emerged unharmed, though he admitted he thought he was “going to die.” The moment was recorded by his father, Dell, who was in another kayak.

While kayaking off Punta Arenas, Chile, Adrian Simancas, 24, was briefly swallowed by a humpback whale. The massive creature emerged from the water, engulfing him and his kayak before spitting him back into the sea.

Simancas described his emotions to CNN, saying he thought he was “going to die” when the whale swallowed him for those few seconds.

“I felt a slimy texture on my face when I turned around and saw dark blue and white colors approaching from behind before I was pulled underwater. At that moment, I believed there was nothing I could do and feared I was going to die, without knowing what had happened,” he recalled.

“I thought it had already eaten me and swallowed me,” he said.

However, he soon felt his life vest pulling him back up, and within seconds, he resurfaced and began to process what had happened.

His father, trying to calm him down, was heard saying, “Stay calm, stay calm.”

As Simancas floated, he worried about his father’s safety, whether they would reach the shore in time, and the risk of hypothermia.

Despite the ordeal, both father and son safely made it back to shore.
