Google job offer: A Reddit post has gone viral after a software engineer shared his dilemma over joining Google in mid-December while his current employer’s notice period runs until mid-January. The user explained that despite securing an offer for a Software Engineer L3 role at Google, his existing firm has made it nearly impossible to shorten the notice period.

Notice period creates conflict

According to the post, the engineer’s Google joining date is set for December 15, but his current employer’s notice period ends on January 9. “From the experience of previous colleagues, I can confidently say that my current employer will not reduce my notice period. Not if I tell them that I have an offer for another company. There is no provision for buy out. Neither can I use my leaves for reducing the notice period,” he wrote.

The Redditor said he had already informed his Google recruiter about the potential delay before signing the offer but “underplayed the severity” of his company’s rigid policy. The recruiter reportedly said the hiring manager wanted the new hire to join within 2025, and that the latest joining dates available this year were December 15, January 5, and January 12.

Offer deadline pressure

The post adds, “He still generated the Offer and asked me to sign it immediately, and meanwhile asked to try to get the notice period reduced. So, I signed it and resigned the same day.” However, due to Diwali holidays and the HR’s absence, the engineer was unable to negotiate sooner.

“I have very low hopes for my employer to reduce my NP. Does Google mind changing the joining date? Additionally, does my special case of end of year cause an issue?” he asked fellow Redditors.

Concerns over offer withdrawal

The user further expressed concern about Google potentially withdrawing the offer if the joining date cannot be shifted. “If Google does not extend my joining date, they won’t be able to get a new hire to join before 15 December anyway. Can they just deny my request for increase of joining date, and revoke my offer?” he wrote.

He also mentioned that his notice period is three months long and clarified, “No intention of working at both places simultaneously.”

Online discussion grows

The post, which the user said was shared “on behalf of a friend,” quickly drew attention from other software professionals who’ve faced similar conflicts while transitioning between jobs in India’s tech sector. Many users suggested reaching out to Google’s HR as early as possible rather than waiting for the situation to escalate.
