Vedanta Aluminium’s commitment to sustainable livelihoods takes root in the heart of Odisha’s Jharsuguda district with the “Jeevika Samriddhi Project.” This agriculture-focused initiative is scripting a compelling story of positive change among local farmers.

Climate Smart Agriculture for Transformative Impact

In its initial phases, the project, embracing ‘Climate Smart Agricultural Practices,’ has elevated the lives of over 400 farming households. As it enters the third phase, the focus expands to empower an additional 500 farming households in Parmanpur, Kumudapali, and Dalki villages.

Transformative Stories from the Fields

Farmers like Manbodh Pradhan from Parmanpur village share their transformative journey through the “System of Rice Intensification (SRI)” method. This method not only reduced input costs but significantly increased productivity, with Pradhan now harvesting 51 quintals of paddy from 2 acres.

Diverse Cultivation and Sustainable Practices

In Gudigaon village, Naresh Patel attests to the success of training sessions on natural pest management and organic farming. These sessions enabled the cultivation of various cash crops, such as ginger, chilly, coriander, and bottle gourd, resulting in substantial returns for the farmers.

Innovative Solutions for Rural Agriculture

Phase III of the project introduces innovative and sustainable solutions, addressing rural agriculture challenges. Pond restoration, solar pumps for reliable irrigation, and modern micro-irrigation methods are key components. Techniques like the “System of Rice Intensification (SRI)” and the “WADI” model are employed to revitalize barren lands and enhance crop yields sustainably.

Improved Irrigation for Year-Round Cultivation

Farmers, now part of the “Jeevika Samriddhi Project,” engage in year-round cultivation due to improved irrigation facilities. Solar-powered irrigation systems in existing bore wells augment infrastructure, supporting the cultivation of hybrid vegetables, including leafy greens.

Economic Prosperity and Income Increment

The adoption of the SRI method and cash crops has significantly increased crop productivity and monthly income. As a result, 77% of farmers associated with the project have experienced a 50% increment in monthly income.

Embracing Organic Farming and Agri-Allied Activities

The project emphasizes organic farming, incorporating practices like vermicompost tanks and bio-manure to enhance soil fertility naturally. Additionally, it supports agri-allied activities like pisciculture, offering farmers new avenues for income generation and market expansion.

Knowledge Empowerment for Sustainable Agriculture

Comprehensive training sessions and exposure visits from experts empower farmers with knowledge of climate-smart agriculture practices and modern technological interventions. These initiatives not only enhance agricultural productivity but also promote environmental sustainability and economic resilience within rural communities. Vedanta Aluminium’s “Jeevika Samriddhi Project” is not just a story of agricultural transformation; it’s a testament to the power of sustainable practices in nurturing communities and the environment.
