The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had invited applicants for the position of head coach (Senior Men) on May 13 as the tenure of current head coach Rahul Dravid comes to an end. As per the advisory issued by BCCI, the newly appointed head coach will have a tenure of three and a half years, starting from July 1, 2024 till December 31, 2027.

It is speculated that the BCCI has approached former cricketer and Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) mentor, Gautam Gambhir, to be team India’s new head coach, replacing Rahul Dravid. However, there is no official confirmation from either side. According to the media reports, Gambir is the BCCI’s top choice for the position.

Earlier this month, BCCI released a notification stating that the applications for the position should be submitted by 6PM IST on May 27, 2024.

Who will be the new coach?

Interestingly, other reports suggest that BCCI has also gone to the former captain of team India, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, to step in and persuade Chennai Super Kings’ coach, Stephen Fleming, to be Dravid’s successor.

Gautam Gambhir, Ricky Ponting, Justin Langer, and Mahela Jayawardene are other probable options for BCCI to replace Dravid. In fact, former captain of Sri Lanka, Mahela Jayawardene, who was suspected to be the new fit for the position, but the sources close to the cricketer denied the rumours, saying that he never applied for the position.
