After Union sports minister Vijay Goel’s selfie ‘sprint’ at the Olympics, another BJP leader and Haryana Cabinet minister Anil Vij is leading a delegation to the mega sports event. It seems Indian politicians can’t curb their urge to visit Rio Olympics, as if their visit boosts Indian athletes’ chances of winning medals. Vij says he and the delegation accompanying him will encourage players of Haryana at the venue. “Our focus will be on the games of Haryana players,” ANI tweeted Vij as saying.
The minister further said he will also have a “look” at the infrastructure at the Olympics venue. And why he wants to do so, almost halfway through the Olympics? Vij’s justification is that he needs to have a “look” at the infrastructure as Haryana may host National Games this year. Well intentioned this justification may be, but why now? Before moving ahead with his plan, it will serve Vij good if he takes some advice from Goel about the trip.

Goel’s selfie spree at the Olympics has embarrassed the Indian contingent. Not only this, his visit even irked the International Olympic Committee (IOC) which threatened to cancel the accreditation of people accompanying the sports minister. The IOC alleged that unaccredited people accompanying Goel were “rude and aggressive”.
Given an opportunity, all country men would like to visit Rio and have a dekko. But all are not ministers, and they can plan a trip either before or after the Olympics, if they are not going to watch the games.
