Mumbai Indians’ pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah etched his name into the franchise’s history books by becoming their highest wicket-taker in IPL history. Bumrah achieved the milestone during MI’s emphatic 55-run win over LSG in their latest clash.

In a spectacular spell, Bumrah returned figures of 4/22, playing a pivotal role in securing a crucial victory for Mumbai. With this performance, Bumrah’s tally for MI rose to 174 wickets in 139 matches, surpassing the long-standing record of Sri Lankan legend Lasith Malinga, who had taken 170 wickets for the franchise. Bumrah’s best figures for MI remain an outstanding 5/10.

Following Bumrah in Mumbai’s all-time wicket-takers list are Harbhajan Singh (127 wickets), Mitchell McClenaghan (71 wickets), Kieron Pollard (69 wickets) and Hardik Pandya (65 wickets).

The victory was Mumbai’s sixth of the season and their fifth consecutive win, propelling them to second place in the IPL 2025 points table as they gain momentum heading into the business end of the tournament.

Batting first, Mumbai Indians posted a daunting total of 215. In response, LSG opened with Mitchell Marsh and Aiden Markram. Bumrah struck early, dismissing Markram for just 9 runs in the third over, the wicket that helped him surpass Malinga’s record.

Nicholas Pooran then launched a brief counter-attack, smashing three sixes off Deepak Chahar in the final over of the powerplay. LSG ended the powerplay at 60/1, with Pooran and Marsh looking set. However, debutant Will Jacks turned the game in MI’s favor, removing Pooran for 27 and skipper Rishabh Pant for just 4.

With 93 needed from the last seven overs, pressure mounted on the Super Giants. Bumrah delivered a match-defining 16th over, taking three wickets of David Miller (24), Abdul Samad (2) and Avesh Khan (0).

Corbin Bosch, making an impressive debut for MI, bowled economically and cleaned up Ravi Bishnoi for 13 in the 19th over. Boult finished off proceedings, dismissing Digvesh Rathi in the final over, as LSG were bundled out for 161.

Bumrah’s exceptional spell and Mumbai Indians’ all-round performance sent a strong message to the rest of the teams in the competition. With their star pacer at his lethal best and their squad hitting peak form, MI looks poised for a strong finish this season.
