Punjab Kings (PBKS) have sealed a top-two finish in IPL 2025 after defeating Mumbai Indians (MI) in Jaipur on Monday. The result pushed MI down to fourth on the points table, confirming their spot in the eliminator scheduled for May 30 in Mullanpur. PBKS, regardless of whether they finish first or second, are now locked in for Qualifier 1 on May 29. The final league match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) will determine the remaining playoff matchups for PBKS and MI.
Batting first, MI posted a competitive 184 for seven, riding on solid performances from Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya. Suryakumar starred once again with a fluent 57 off 39 balls, surpassing Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record to become MI’s highest run-scorer in a single IPL season. Hardik Pandya added impetus at the death with a brisk 26 off just 15 balls.

Opener Ryan Rickelton laid a strong foundation with 27 off 20, helping MI to 52 for one in the powerplay despite some sharp bowling from Arshdeep Singh. Kyle Jamieson, making his PBKS debut, endured some early punishment from Rickelton but found his rhythm as the innings progressed.
As per the playoff structure, the winner of Qualifier 1 advances directly to the final, while the loser gets a second shot in Qualifier 2 on June 1 in Ahmedabad, against the winner of the eliminator.
Here’s how the playoff picture could unfold:
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)
Points: 17 | Net Run Rate: 0.255
Remaining match: vs LSG (Tuesday)
RCB have the advantage of playing the final league match. A win against LSG guarantees them a top-two finish. To overtake PBKS (NRR 0.372) and finish first, RCB must beat LSG by 34 runs (if they score 200) or chase a target of 200 with at least 21 balls remaining.
If RCB lose, they will drop to third place and face MI in the eliminator.
Gujarat Titans (GT)
Points: 18 | Net Run Rate: 0.254
Remaining matches: None
GT’s final standing depends on RCB’s result. If RCB beat LSG, GT will fall to third and play MI in the eliminator. GT can finish second only if LSG beat RCB.
