Centuries by Quinton de Kock and Rassie van der Dussen

Earlier, invited to bat first at the toss by New Zealand skipper Tom Latham, South African openers gave an ordinary start with skipper Temba Bavuma getting out for 24 runs, putting on a first wicket partnership of 38 runs with  de Kock.

Since then, the Proteas never looked back, with de Kock and der Dussen putting on a 200 run partnership for the second wicket. After  de Kock (114 runs from 116 deliveries) was caught by Philips off the bowling of Tim Southee in the 40th over of the match,  der Dussen (133 off 118 balls) then went on to put 78 runs partnership with David Miller (53 runs off 30 deliveries for the third wicket. For New Zealand, Southee took two wickets, while Trent Boult and James Neesham took one wicket each.

Chasing the total, New Zealand never looked confident at the crease, with batsmen getting out at regular intervals.  Glenn Philips and opener Will Young were the only two batsmen who made some useful contributions with the bat. While Philips scored 60 runs off 50 deliveries, Young was also looking solid at one stage before he was dismissed for 33 runs while facing 37 deliveries.
