India’s vice captain and wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant was injured on the opening day of India’s 4th test match against England. BCCI has given a key update on Pant’s condition after various reports stated that he has been ruled out for the remainder of the series. BCCI said, “Rishabh Pant, who sustained an injury to his right foot on Day 1 of the Manchester Test, will not be performing wicket-keeping duties for the remainder of the match. Dhruv Jurel will assume the role of wicket-keeper,”

“Despite his injury, Rishabh Pant has joined the team on Day 2 and will be available to bat as per team requirements,” the statement added.

Pant was hurt while batting on 37, trying to make a reverse sweep to a yorker from Chris Woakes. The delivery made a faint edge and hit his foot, leaving him in immediate pain. He was struggling to walk and had to be taken off the field in a medical cart. Bleeding and swelling were also visible, and have raised serious concern among fans and teammates.

BCCI statement on Rishabh Pant’s injury

Earlier, the BCCI had confirmed the development and stated on social media, “Rishabh Pant was hit on his right foot while batting on Day 1 of the Manchester Test. He was taken for scans at the stadium. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress.”

Pant’s exit is a major blow, as the batsman was in great form throughout the series and has scored a massive 462 runs at an average of 77.00, including two centuries and two half-centuries. He is currently in the slot of the second-highest scorer in the series.

Ishan Kishan is likely to replace Pant

The team management may choose Ishan Kishan as a replacement. Kishan has recently been included in the BCCI’s central contract list. He has also played two County Championship games for Nottinghamshire in June and has scored 77 and 87. In terms of records, Kishan has experience of over 3,600 runs in the 60 first-class matches, and he can be vital to the team.

This marks Pant’s second injury in this series, after suffering a finger injury during the third Test at Lord’s. Despite the problem, Pant delivered one of the remarkable performances of the tour. He even managed to score 74 while he was visibly uncomfortable.
