In his interaction with FinancialExpress.com, Dr Dharma Narayan Das talked about how Bodoland serves as a gateway to Northeast India and consists of Kokrajhar, Chirang, Buxa, Tamulpur and Udalgiri districts. These five districts make up Bodoland, an independently administered region of Assam.

Set near the foothills of Bhutan, Bodoland has a population of 35 lakh. Dr Das spoke about the natural beauty of Bodoland which boasts lush subtropical forests. Earlier, Bodoland suffered from an insurgency problem and remained unexplored by visitors. Dr Das explained that after the 2020 peace treaty was signed, all is peaceful now and Bodoland is ready to welcome visitors who are interested in traveling to offbeat destinations looking for unusual experiences.

Bodoland’s biggest attraction is the Manas National Park, which also happens to be a World Heritage Site. It boasts more than 450 species of birds, including endogenous ones like the Bengal Florican. The Golden Langur is another great attraction in Bodoland.

Adventure activities on offer in Bodoland include paragliding, river rafting and a host of other water sports.

Rafting is offered on several rivers in Bodoland. In Manas, thrill seekers also have the opportunity to start rafting from Bhutan and ending up in Bodoland along an extremely scenic route. Another location is Bagmati, a mere 100 kilometres from Assam’s capital, Guwahati. Apart from that, there are several more locations for river rafting in Bodoland.

One of the best locations for paragliding in the Northeast is in Bodoland and international competitions have also been held here, informed Dr Das. Apart from that, visitors can also indulge in cycling.

Regarding attending the Adventure Tourism Meet in Shillong, Dr Das said it was a great opportunity to listen to some amazing panellists express their learned views. There was a lot to learn about adventure tourism, he reiterated. He hoped that all the learnings from the Meet would subsequently be implemented on the ground. Dr Das struck a note of caution as well, saying that while enjoying the adrenaline rush of adventure activities, one should also be mindful of the safety aspects.
