The central government on Wednesday announced the appointment of Dr Poonam Gupta, Director General, National Council of Applied Economic Research, New Delhi to the post of Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a three-year term. The appointment comes just days after the RBI’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting scheduled for April 7-9, 2025. 

“The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved the appointment of Dr Poonam Gupta, Director General, National Council of Applied Economic Research, New Delhi to the post of Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a period of three years from the date of joining the post or until further orders, whichever is earlier,” the government circular said. 

Poonam Gupta will take over from Michael Patra who stepped down from the position of Deputy Governor in January. 

She is also a member of the Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council and serves as the Convener of the Advisory Council to the 16th Finance Commission. Gupta had joined NCAER in 2021, bringing with her nearly two decades of experience in senior roles at the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank in Washington, DC.

Poonam Gupta holds a Master’s Ph.D in Economics from the University of Maryland, USA, and a Master’s in Economics from the Delhi School of Economics, Delhi University.
