The Indian market finally crossed into new territory on Thursday, November 27, 2025 with both benchmark indices hitting fresh lifetime highs. The Sensex surged past the 86,000 mark for the first time, touching 86,026.18, while the Nifty climbed to a new record at 26,306.95, overtaking its earlier peak of 26,277.35 set on September 27, 2024.
Here is a detailed timeline of Sensex’s upward trajectory and the time it took to scale the last 10,000 points.
Sensex: 80,000 changed the pace; streak of rapid milestones followed
The Sensex has taken about 14 months to hit the current highs. But here is a chronological account of the Sensex’s journey through the 80,000 levels thus far.
The real acceleration came on July 3, 2024, when the index crossed 80,000 intraday. The jump from 70k to 80k in under seven months was one of the fastest 10,000-point climbs in the benchmark’s history. Once the 80,000 mark was breached, the rally turned into a sprint.
The Sensex crossed 81,000 on July 18, and 82,000 on August 1. The mood shifted from steady buying to conviction. By September 12, the index moved past 83,000 after a strong session driven by short covering and global stimulus signals.
Just a week later, on September 19, it crossed 84,000 and then 85,000 on September 23, 2024. That phase delivered a cluster of milestones rarely seen in such short succession.
The rally peaked on September 27, 2024, when the Sensex briefly touched 85,478.25, a level that would hold as the record for over a year.
Tracking Sensex journey since December 2023: 70,000-80,000 levels
This milestone run traces back to December 11, 2023, when the Sensex first crossed 70,000. That move marked the beginning of a steady uptrend powered by strong domestic liquidity and improving economic indicators. The breakout wasn’t celebrated loudly at the time but it quietly set the stage for what followed.
Less than four months later, on April 9, 2024, the Sensex crossed 75,000 for the first time. That level acted as a psychological checkpoint: the market had moved from cautious optimism into the next level.
Sensex levels: Key milestone
Sensex’s journey to 60,000 was also quite quick. It reached the 60,000 level on September 24, 2021 just as the world was coming out of the scourge of Covid.
In fact 2021 was an interesting year for the Sensex. Earlier in January of the same year, the Index breached past the 50,000 mark on January 22, 2021.
The Index created in 1986 has seen a phenomenal run since then. The 30-share Index crossed the first 1,000 levels in 1990. It soared past the 5,000 points mark in early 2000s to 50,000 levels in 2021. It had breached the 25,000-mark midway in 2014.
