I HAVE a 1 TB external storage drive I bought a couple of years ago occupying a considerable amount of space on the computer table. Just above it is the new WD My Passport, just bigger than an MP3 player. The smaller unit has an internal storage of 3TB, three times the size of the old giant.
The WD My Passport 3TB is really compact and fits your grip easily, though it is slightly heavy for its size. The data transfer cable goes in the bottom and it is proprietary like with other WD models.
I tried the storage first with a USB 2.0 port and it took me three minutes to move a 7GB folder into the drive. Then we copied the same folder back into the PC with a USB 3.0 port and the time was cut to a third and we moved the files in just about a minute. Since USB 3.0 is becoming standard on most devices these days, we can expect users to have smooth sailing most of the time.
The drive also comes with an auto-backup mode for Windows. However, on Mac this particular model had issues and my MacBook Air couldn’t recognise it. One thing I like about the drive is that it does not need power despite its 3TB storage. My old 1TB drive in contrast comes with a power adapter.
The WD My Passport 3TB is still not available in India, though the 1TB and 2TB variants are available for R7,980 and R11,910, respectively. This specific model is expected in India soon.
