With the upcoming update YouTube plans to expand its parental control features. This feature will make it easy for parents to see what type of contents or pages their teens are searching. They can also supervise what their teens are consuming. For example if someone searches for adult content, the parents can provide guidance on why they shouldn’t consume such content.

So how does the new update work? The parents will get notifications or mail on what their teens are looking for on YouTube. These notifications can help parents to discuss the pros and cons of every content that they search or watch. The new update is a part of YouTube’s Family Centre hub. Parents can also see how many and what channels their teens have subscribed to.

With this update parents can lookout for any negative comment that their teenagers might add in someone’s post. In addition to this in collaboration with Common Sense Networks, parents can teach their teens about responsible content creation. Moreover, YouTube aims to create a transparent, safe and secured YouTube space for teens. This eventually aims to create a social media space for teens, where their parents can also blend in. Moreover, the social media platform aims to create a balance between independence of their teens while keeping the parents informed.

Other updates

YouTube explained in an official blog that the feature of linking the account won’t impact the YouTube algorithm in terms of what’s shown to the teen. Notably, algorithms are already based on what the user consumes and is personalized for each user.

Initially, the parental controls feature of YouTube was introduced back in 2021. Furthermore, the social media platform had already introduced  parent controlling features for children. Now it aims to expand this feature for teens also.

According to the blog, Ellen Selkie, who is a paediatric expert from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, highlighted how important it is for “teens to have space to grow while knowing their parents are still there if they need support.” She further added that this new approach by YouTube is not just to build trust but also focuses on verifying the contents.
