The iPhone 16 has a brand-new design. Naysayers might have a field day denying it, but truth be told, there are a few big changes that make this year’s iPhone different from last year’s. The cameras are now stacked vertically one over the other as opposed to the iPhone 15 where they were positioned diagonally. That’s a big change not just in terms of aesthetics but also functionally. The new alignment allows capture of spatial photos, viewable on the Vision Pro headset. There are two new buttons, too, one on the left is the Action button and the one on the right is the Camera capture. Both unlock new capabilities never seen before on these iPhones.
iPhone 16 colours deep down
The other big highlight is the updated colour scheme. For years now, Apple fans and enthusiasts have been craving for a bit more colour. Not muted, but contrasty. The iPhone 16 is just what the doctor ordered. These new iPhones break from the monotony of last few versions and celebrate colour in all glory. There are five colours to choose from—ultramarine, teal, pink, white, and black. The white and versions are perhaps the most basic, been there done that, affair whiole the ultramarine, teal, and pink have stunning new chassis that evokes a sense of joy. They are exciting.

While Apple doesn’t say it outright, ultramarine is the hero colour this year. It has varying shades of blue that becomes the darkest purple around the camera housing. Real-world data however suggests, people—presumably buyers—are still looking to get the mundane stuff, i.e., black and white. The ultramarine version may seem like a hit on paper, but evidently, people seem much more enamoured by the white and black.
Search for iPhone 16 black appears to have hit an all-time high in September, 2024. More people searched for iPhone 16 black in this month compared to ultramarine which was in fact the least searched version, according to data from Google Trends. The white version was a close second followed by pink and teal. For those unaware, Apple launched the iPhone 16 series on September 9 and went on sale starting September 20. That the black and white are the most sought-after colours on search clearly suggests demand for classic colours will never go out of fashion which is possibly why most brands continue to invest in them even today.
