Samsung has launched the Galaxy A16 5G in India. It’s a typical mid-range smartphone with one atypical feature. The A16 is guaranteed to receive an astounding six generations of OS (operating system) upgrades and six years of security updates. No other competing smartphone at its price comes even close.
The Galaxy A16 5G is launching with Android 14 (based OneUI 6.1) out of the box which means, per Samsung, it should have your back until Android 20. The company refers to it as the “democratisation of flagship features.” For those unaware, Samsung offers up to seven years of major OS and security updates to several flagship phones like the Galaxy S24 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold 6. The A16 becomes the first Samsung phone to get the “second-best” software support window to date, which is impressive given that it has a starting price of less than Rs 20,000.
“These industry-leading upgrades and updates are set to keep the device always up to date and ensure smoother usage experiences for users for a long period,” Samsung said in a release sent out to the media today.
Samsung Galaxy A16 5G: Price, availability
The Galaxy A16 5G is priced at Rs 18,999 for a version with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. A model with double the storage will set you back by Rs 21,999. It comes in blue black, gold and light green. Samsung has not revealed the exact date of availability but launch offers include Rs 1,000 cashback on purchases made using Axis and SBI credit cards.

The Galaxy A16 5G has a 6.7-inch 90Hz AMOLED display with a 1080p resolution and a MediaTek Dimensity 6300 under the hood. It has three cameras on the back—50-megapixel wide, 5-megapixel ultra wide, and another 2-megapixel macro. The front camera is a 13-megapixel. Powering the A16 is a 5,000mAh battery. The phone has an IP54 dust and splash resistance rating. Rounding off the package are quality-of-life signature Samsung features like Samsung Wallet and Voice Focus.
