India has formally entered the era of digital travel by gradually rolling out chip-embedded e-passports as part of a phased implementation strategy. During the 13th Passport Seva Divas, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced key advancements in the Passport Seva Programme (PSP) and confirmed the nationwide implementation of e-passports. The latest passports represent a major advancement over the conventional booklet-format travel documents.
An investment of over Rs 1,000 crore has been earmarked to set up 400 additional Passport Seva Kendras and modernize 600 current centers by 2029, aiming to extend passport services to every district in the country. The initiative also partners with India Post to strengthen last-mile delivery, while leveraging AI technologies, chatbots, and digital verification tools to significantly reduce processing durations.
What is an e-passport:
An e-passport blends conventional paper-based travel documents with an embedded electronic chip that securely stores the holder’s personal and biometric information. This chip, based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, contains all essential identity data, ensuring enhanced security and faster verification at immigration checkpoints.
Key benefits Of e-Passports:
Encrypted Chip Integration: Embedded within the front cover, this chip securely holds encrypted personal and biometric details.
Biometric Data Capture: Stores key identifiers such as facial image, fingerprint scans, and iris data.
Touch-Free Scanning: Utilizes contactless tech, allowing the chip to be read wirelessly for quicker processing at airports.
Meets ICAO Standards: Designed in full compliance with the global guidelines set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
