In a bid to address reported concerns of fire and risk of explosion, Google has announced a significant initiative to release a software update for the Pixel 6a. As part of a new ‘Battery Performance Programme,’ all Pixel 6a users will receive a mandatory Android 16 software update, which is set to roll out automatically starting July 8.
The move comes after multiple reports highlighted severe battery problems in some Pixel 6a units, including instances of battery swelling and alleged device explosions. While other Pixel 6 series models have already received the Android 16 update, the Pixel 6a was excluded from the elite list.
The upcoming Android 16 update for the Pixel 6a is designed to activate crucial battery management features to minimise the risk of overheating. Google has indicated that once a Pixel 6a device reaches 400 charge cycles, its battery capacity and charging performance will be automatically adjusted. Users whose devices are nearing this threshold (at 375 charge cycles) will receive a reminder notification.
Google clarified that these battery-related changes and new features will remain inactive until the 400-charge-cycle mark is crossed. Post the threshold, users might notice a reduced charging speed and temporary fluctuations in the battery level indicator as the phone adapts to its revised capacity.
Google initiates a compensation and repair program
For Pixel 6a users whose devices are classified as Impacted Devices under the Battery Performance Programme, Google is offering several options for a resolution:
– Free-of-charge repairs: Users can opt to have their affected devices repaired.
– Cash compensation: For those who prefer not to pursue repairs, a cash compensation option is available.
– Store hardware discount: Users can also choose to receive a discount applicable on their next purchase through the Google Store.
Hence, if you have been facing issues with your Google Pixel 6a lately and were eager to get a solution, it is advised to download the software update once it is made available. Additionally, you can reach out to a Google-certified service center for assistance if the fix doesn’t solve your concerns.
Currently, Google is offering the Pixel 8a as its most affordable smartphone, with the newer Pixel 9a commanding a slight premium.
