Google Maps has introduced a new feature that lets users check real-time average Air Quality Index (AQI) readings across different locations. This rollout, which serves over 2 billion active users, aims to make air quality monitoring easier and more accessible globally. Users in India can access this information directly within the app. The Air Quality layer on Google Maps is now available in over 40 countries worldwide, including the United States, Australia, Israel, Chile, Singapore and more.

The AQI feature provides hourly updates and is accessible for any location within India and across many parts of the world. Google Maps displays AQI readings in an easy-to-understand format, rated from 0 to 500, with corresponding levels of air quality. To access this feature, users simply need to open Google Maps, click the layers icon, and select the “Air Quality” option. This helps users stay informed and make better decisions, whether at home or when traveling.

An AQI reading of 0 to 50 (Good) means minimal impact on health; 51 to 100 (Satisfactory) means it is generally acceptable, though there might be a minor impact on sensitive groups; 101 to 200 (Moderate) means it may cause discomfort to people with sensitivities; 201 to 300 (Poor) implies it may affect healthy individuals and worsen health issues; 301 to 400 (Very Poor) is considered potential for significant health impact; 401 to 500 (Severe) is a serious risk meaning everyone should avoid outdoor activities.

The air quality is represented by colors ranging from green (good) to red (severe). When the AQI indicates poor or severe levels, Google Maps also provides cautionary tips. For instance, users are advised to limit outdoor activities and consider indoor air purifiers.
