The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has issued an urgent alert to warn Indian citizens about international fraud calls. In a recent tweet, the DoT cautioned people to be vigilant when receiving calls from unfamiliar international numbers, especially those with country codes such as +77, +89, +85, +86, +84, and similar codes. These numbers are commonly associated with fraudulent activities.
The DoT emphasized that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and DoT itself never make unsolicited calls to users, and any such calls should be treated with suspicion. Fraudsters often use these international numbers to trick people into revealing sensitive information or engaging in financial scams.
The DoT has provided clear instructions on how to take action if a user receives such suspicious calls-
Report suspicious calls: Users are encouraged to report any fraudulent calls through the official portal, Sancharsaathi.gov.in, via the Chakshu feature. This is part of the government’s effort to create awareness and help block these malicious numbers.
Chakshu is a platform that allows citizens to report suspected fraud or unwanted communications like spam. It helps people report things like scam calls, fake messages, or unwanted marketing calls that they receive through their phones, SMS, or WhatsApp. By using Chakshu, you can alert authorities about potential frauds, such as impersonation or cyber-crimes, and also report spam or commercial calls you did not agree to receive. The system helps protect users and works with telecom providers to take action against such issues.
Help block fraudulent numbers: By reporting these calls, users can help the DoT take swift action to block these numbers and prevent others from falling victim to the scams.
The tweet concludes with a reminder to stay alert and protect yourself and others from potential fraud. The DoT urges the public to stay safe, report any suspicious activity, and protect themselves from international fraud calls.
