K. Renee suddenly found herself locked out of her Google Drive account making her unable to access over 222,000 words of her works in progress. American author, K. Renee is believed to use Google Docs to write her stories.

News comes in that, known for her romance novels, Renee’s creative process came to an abrupt halt when Google Drive denied her entry without explanation on March 24, 2024.

Locked-Away!

On March 24, “All 10 of her works in progress—some 222,000 words across multiple files and folders—were frozen. Not just frozen, but inaccessible on her phone and tablet,” Wired explained.  It is believed that when her husband fetched her laptop, Renee logged into Docs and tried sharing the documents again. Then Renne got a message saying “You no longer have permission to view this document. If you believe this is an error, contact the document owner.”

Surprisingly, the mishap that Renee faced was not due to any technical glitch. Experts suggest that this was because Google found her content inappropriate.

Furthermore, this raises the question of how much Google is micro-managing our content! Some also suggest that “Is Google Drive capable enough to identify what’s right or wrong?”

Is Google Drive really safe?

Google never told Renee which of the over 200,000 words broke the platform’s rules, as reported by Wired. The Google Drive terms of service explains that files containing violence, gore, and child sexual abuse material, are prohibited. ‘ Users can always request an appeal if they believe their content was flagged in error,’ Google highlighted.

From what it is understood, Renee might not be the only one who has lost access to her content on Google. In 2021, Google locked the co-creator of Terraria out of his Google account. He was locked out of services such as Gmail, Play Store, and YouTube. Reportedly, this led to the cancellation of the release of Terraria on the now-defunct Stadia.
