Apple has just unveiled the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 chip and spoiler alert – it only comes on the base model. The leaks and rumours had hinted at Apple bringing the M5 chip only to the base variant of the MacBook Pro, and Apple did exactly that. The M5 chip promises performance gains over the outgoing M4 chip but co-exists with the M4 Pro and M4 Max MacBook Pro models. That’s quite a weird lineup, isn’t it?
The core upgrade in the new 2025 model is the M5 chip, which now features a redesigned 10-core GPU with a Neural Accelerator embedded in each core. Apple says that this architecture delivers up to 3.5x faster AI performance and up to 1.6x faster graphics compared to the previous generation.
The new M5 chip also includes an enhanced 16-core Neural Engine, which promises to accelerate generative AI models and AI-driven tasks, which power the new Apple Intelligence features integrated into macOS Tahoe.
Apple 14-inch MacBook Pro M5: What’s new?
This focus on AI translates directly into professional workflows. Apple stated that the M5 chip is built to accelerate deep learning, data modeling, and AI video enhancement. Users can expect faster results for tasks like text-to-image generation in apps like Draw Things. Apple also promises quicker processing for running large language models (LLMs) locally on the device in applications like LM Studio.
In Apple’s words, those upgrading from the M4 MacBook Pro will see up to 1.8x faster AI video-enhancing performance in Topaz Video. Those coming from the M1 models will experience gains up to 6x faster AI performance.
Beyond raw processing power, the new 14-inch MacBook Pro boasts up to 24 hours of battery life. The M5 model also features up to 2x faster SSD performance than its predecessor, allowing for quicker loading of local LLMs and quicker handling of large media files, with configurations now supporting up to 4TB of storage.
What remains unchanged?
The new model retains the 14-inch Liquid Retina XDR display with the optional nano-texture finish, the same 12MP Center Stage camera, and the same-yet-still-good immersive six-speaker sound system. The laptop is available in space black and silver.
The new 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 is available for pre-order, with general availability beginning on October 22. The 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 starts at Rs 1,69,900.
