Apple’s highly anticipated “It’s Glowtime” event is set to take place on September 9, 2024, and fans around the world are buzzing about the upcoming launches. While the iPhone 16 series—which will likely spawn four new models aka iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max—is the most highly anticipated, rumour has it that Apple is also looking to upgrade other devices, most notably the Apple Watch.
We’ve already covered all that is expected from the iPhone 16 series this year. Today, we will dive into the Apple Watch to give you a full list of updates—probably—coming to one of Apple’s most successful product lines. According to a Bloomberg report, this will be the first time in two years that all Apple Watch models—Watch number Series, Watch Ultra, and Watch SE—will receive an upgrade at the same time.
Apple event on September 9, 2024: How to watch it live
The event will be streamed live from Apple Park at 10:30 PM IST, and can be watched on apple.com, YouTube, or through the Apple TV app.
Apple Watch Series 10: Bigger, thinner, and packed with health features
The Apple Watch Series 10 is—apparently—the star of this year’s show. It celebrates the 10th anniversary of Apple Watch, which made its debut back in 2014. The new Series 10 is expected to come with a sleek redesign—its first since the Series 7—offering larger screen-size options and a thinner watch case. While it may look similar to last year’s Series 9, these subtle improvements aim to give the smartwatch a more premium feel.
In terms of health features, the sleep apnea detection feature is set to be the game changer. Building on existing sleep tracking capabilities, this feature will help users monitor their breathing patterns during sleep and recommend further testing if needed. Sleep apnea, which causes interrupted breathing during sleep, is a condition many people unknowingly suffer from, so this could be a significant upgrade for health-conscious users.
However, don’t expect blood-oxygen sensing to make a return just yet. Due to a lawsuit with Masimo Corp., Apple had to remove the feature earlier this year, and it seems unlikely it will be back in time for this launch.
Apple Watch Ultra 3: Minor tweaks, major durability
On the other hand, the Apple Watch Ultra 3 is getting minor internal upgrades, but nothing drastic in terms of its exterior design. This rugged, high-performance model will likely maintain its appeal to athletes and adventurers. There’s no word on revolutionary new features for the Ultra, but improved internal hardware will ensure it stays at the top of the wearables market.
Additionally, both the Series 10 and Ultra 3 are rumoured to have enhanced water resistance—with Series 10 being certified for high-speed water sports up to 20 metres deep. This may also mean that the Depth app, previously exclusive to the Ultra, could be coming to the Series 10.
Although hypertension detection was expected this year, it seems this feature will not be included just yet, leaving users looking forward to future updates.
