AI race is on full throttle!. Silicon Valley giants like Google, Meta, and Microsoft are all trying to race ahead of each other in the AI race. Google and Meta have already started poaching and hiring the best minds for their respective AI programmes and divisions. Since there are a lot of technical roles that need urgent hiring, including engineering and programming.

What is AI Cheating?

However, there is a problem that the tech giants are facing in the hiring of people in these technical fields. The problem is very ironic, and you probably would have guessed it by now AI Artificial Intelligence, which is now being used by employees interviewing for programming and coding roles to cheat and develop code. Many candidates have been found using AI tools available online to ace the coding challenges they face. All of this has led to Google and other tech companies to increase their scrutiny in the hiring process.

Google’s Challenge

With off-camera tools answering coding questions, recruiters often can’t tell if the candidate truly understands the concepts. This has sparked strong demand inside Google to move back to face-to-face hiring rounds where talent can be tested in real time. According to reports, more than half of candidates in some virtual technical interviews have been suspected of cheating with AI.

Sundar Pichai’s Stance

Google CEO says, “We are making sure [that] with the advent of AI, we still hire people who have strong computer science fundamentals and can do the job well.” Additionally, he added that He confirmed that Google will “definitely introduce at least one round” of in-person interviews for all technical roles.

Rivals Facing AI Cheating Too

Well, Google isn’t the only one who is staring this challenge. Tech giants like Microsoft and Meta are also amongst the companies battling AI assisted cheating. For instance Amazon now asks candidates to sign a formal agreement not to use unauthorised AI tools. Anthropic has an outright ban on AI use in applications. Cisco and McKinsey have both brought back on-site interview rounds. Deloitte already reinstated in-person interviews for its UK graduate programme. While remote hiring saves money and time, the integrity of the hiring process is at risk. For companies like Google, ensuring that employees have strong fundamentals is now more important than speed.
