Shallu Jindal, earlier Oswal, was born in a Punjabi family in 1970. She is the sister of Shael Oswal and Pankaj Oswal and the daughter of Abhey Kumar Oswal, who founded Oswal Agro Mills and Oswal Greentech.
She spent most of her childhood in Ludhiana. She started taking Kathak lessons from the local Kathak Guru and was active in school and college-level competitions. After receiving education in Mumbai for six years and studying Business Management in fashion, she went to the UK to study interior design, in 1990. She met Naveen in 1994 and the two tied the knot.

She is the Chairperson of JSP Foundation and Jindal Art Institute is a highly accomplished Kuchipudi danseuse and a noted social contributor. She is the Chancellor of OP Jindal University in Raigarh, Vice President of Flag Foundation of India, former Chairperson of National Bal Bhavan under the Union Ministry of HRD, and the Founder President of Young FICCI Ladies Organisation (YFLO).
